No amount of power or wealth can save former President Benigno Aquino III from the graft charges filed against him for his alleged role in the anti-terrorist operation that led to the massacre of 44 police commandos in Maguindanao in 2015, according to Presidential Chief Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo.

In a statement, Panelo, in a statement, said the “time for reckoning” for President Rodrigo Duterte’s predecessor has finally come.

“Sooner or later the the law will catch up on those who use power or wealth to shield themselves from the majesty of the law,” said Panelo in a statement.

“Dura Lex Sed Lex, no power nor wealth can escape from it, it can only delay its coming, but when it does, it operates ex propio vigore (with full force and  effect),” Panelo said.

Aquino was ordered charged by the Ombudsman with usurpation of authority under Article 177 of the Revised Penal Code and violation of Section 3(a) of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.

Co-accused in the case are former Philippine National Police chief Alan Purisima and former Special Action Force Director Getulio Napenas.

Almost 400 SAF troopers went to Mamasapano, Maguindanao on the midnight of January 24, 2015 in pursuit of wanted terrorist Zulkifli Bin Hir alias Marwan.

The operation, dubbed as Oplan Exodus, neutralized Marwan but also resulted in an encounter with members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters.

Forty-four troopers of the PNP’s elite team perished as they were moving out of the area.

The charges came from consolidated complaints filed by SAF 44 families and the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption in 2016 after Aquino finished his term.

The complainants had alleged that Aquino committed gross and inexcusable negligence when he knew fully well that the operation was flawed, and breached the chain of command when he allowed Purisima to participate in its planning. — MDM, GMA News
